The department of English was established along with the establishment of the Mahavidyalaya in June 1993. English is one of the core subjects the Institute offers for undergraduate students. English is also taught as Ability Enhancement Course to all streams of first year students. Department aims to sensitize students to aesthetic, cultural and social aspects of literature introducing them to extensive view of social, political, cultural and other aspects of society as reflected in literature. Through the study of British literature, Indian English literature, Language studies, Communication skills, Literary theory and criticism, the department equips students with the ability to analyse texts and express ideas clearly preparing them for academic and professional success in a globalized world. Prompting the culture of English-speaking students, the department tries to make students understand literary text and society through films and develop analytical approach in them. The department organises workshops and review writing competitions on films and plays for students through literary club. The department runs Vision Film Society since 2009. The department has some CDs and DVDs on English novels, plays, cassettes on phonetics and ACEN Tape recorder for giving students practice into accent in Received Pronunciation. The films based on the texts prescribed are screened to give students insights on various themes and issues. With all its sources like library books, reference books, audio video cassettes, the department has taken efforts to make students employable and humane. As a result of this our alumni have been working in the different professional sectors.
